A Halloween Night in Mexico City - download as a pdf
It was November 2, the cool winds blew softly as El Dia del Los Muertos was being celebrated in Mexico city. This day for Mexico is somewhat like Halloween for them. In this feast people go to cemeteries and take a feast to the relatives in their family who had passed away. The night was a very clear one, where you could see all the bright stars shining and the great big full harvest moon enlighten the city. Three cousins were among the large crowds of people celebrating this day. Raul, Hugo and Pedro were out and about creating mischief and pulling pranks on people they encountered at this feast.
When the three of them got tired of doing their childish things, they wondered what else they could be doing.
What do you guys want to do? asked Pedro.
We dont know, replied the other bored cousins.
Ive got an idea, exclaimed Raul. Lets go wander off into the mountains and go look for unusual night creatures.
They all agreed that it was the perfect thing to do on a night like the one they were having. As they began their trip through these big tall dark mountains, they began to make up scary stories to try to scare one another. Hugo had a story about a witch who had once haunted his home. Raul had a story about mummies that once roamed a city near Mexico City, and Pedro had the most realistic story of all. His story was about the llorona or, the one who cries. A legend well-known through out the country of Mexico.
Supposably, a young woman had once dropped her two children into a river in Mexico because she was mentally ill, and when she was near death, she realized what she had done to her children. Now, there are those who say if youre passing by a river late at night, you can hear the llorona crying and searching for her children.
It just so happens, that while Pedro was in the last part of this story, that these three cousins were approaching a river, which they had forgotten they had to pass in order to keep on climbing the mountains. Al three of them started shaking and trembling. They had lost sense of direction, and did not know what to do. They could no longer see the path from which they were coming from and they didnt have much light since some clouds were covering the white moon.
All of a sudden, they heard a really strange noise. A noise that sounded as if someone would be weeping.
Mis hijos, mis hijos my sons, my sons, is what they heard.
This is when all of them started to get scared. They were by a river and someone was crying.
Could that be you know who? gulped Pedro.
The three boys started yelling and running as fast and as far away as they could from the river. They finally got to hear the music coming from the feast. They followed these sounds and soon came back into Mexico City. When they got back there, they searched for their friends to tell them what they had seen but, when they did tell them no one believed them because they were really big pranksters and jokers. That was the day that Raul, Pedro, and Hugo decided to grow up and act a little more mature
