Eerie Imaginings is SJCPL's annual autumn short story writing contest. It is open to grades 3 - 12. You can get a taste for the types of stories by reading 2006's, 2005's, 2004's and 2003's winners.

Entry Dates 2007 …

    • Contest starts Tuesday, September 4
    • Deadline for entries is Friday, October 5

Entry Details…

    • Four Grade Categories: Grades 3 - 4, 5 - 6, 7 - 8, and 9 - 12 (Teens)
    • 1 story per entry form
    • Group entries (one story written by multiple students) are not allowed
    • Stories should not be similar in plot to other past or present entries, TV shows, films or books and must not have been previously published
    • Teens should make a copy of your story before submission; stories will NOT be returned
    • Teen winners will be asked to provide SJCPL a copy of their story on disk
    • Grades 3 - 8 stories may be picked up at the branch you indicated on your entry form, after the Awards Ceremony

Judging Criteria…
Stories must be:
    • Titled, and an original creative work
    • For Teens: Word-processed on 8 1/2 X 11 paper, double spaced with 1” margins
    • Grades 3 - 8: Typed, preferably, or neatly handwritten
    • Grammatically correct
    • Teens: No longer than 12 single-sided pages
    • Grades 3 - 8: No longer than 5 single notebook pages or 1,200 words

Judges will award points for...
    • Character Development
    • Originality
    • Style
    • Description
    • Plot
    • Theme
    • Dialogue
    • Setting
    • Tone

Special Note to Teachers of Grades 3 - 8:
    • Please screen the stories and submit no more than 7 from each of your classes
    • Submit your entries in an envelope clearly marked with your name, school, grade and the name of the branch where you would like to pick up the stories
    • All students who write stories will receive small prizes, if you will note the number of additional stories and include this with the 7 stories being entered
    • Children are free to bring their own stories to the library, even if they are not chosen by their teacher
