Education and Experience: High School graduation or equivalent.
Hours:
  • Required to work up to 10 –19 hours per week, regularly scheduled.
  • Required to work up to two evenings per week and variable Saturdays. Supervisor arranges work schedule.
  • Required to work additional hours as an Emergency Substitute.
  • Required to work the required Sunday afternoons per calendar year.
Requirements:
  • Requires dependability, punctuality, good attendance and work habits.
  • Requires a thorough comprehension of alphabetical and numerical sequences (test is given during interview).
  • Requires basic understanding of self-check technology or willingness to learn.
  • Requires standing and walking (no sit down work).
  • Requires good vision to read labels on books and materials.
  • Requires physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift, carry heavy library materials, and push heavy carts filled with books (20-25 lbs)
  • Requires excellent customer service manner.
  • Required to adapt to changes in the work environment.
  • Drug Testing and Criminal History Check are required as a condition of Employment. Any offer of employment is subject to the applicant passing a drug-screening test.

Essential Job Duties:
    Working under the direct supervision of the Branch Manager or designated Supervisor, the person in this position will perform the following:
  • Sort, cart, and re-shelve returned library material.
  • Read shelves, keep material in correct sequence, and re-shelve library material which is out of place.
  • Maintain neatness on shelves and in public areas.
  • Shift books and other library materials when necessary.
  • Maintain neatness in work areas, Staff Only areas, and public areas, this includes but not limited to items found on floors, tables, or display areas.
  • Other similar tasks as assigned.

SUBSTITUTE LIBRARY ASSISTANT - Position open until September 10, 2010

Pay Range: $12.35-$14.52, hourly

Location: Main Library, 304 S. Main St., South Bend, IN 46601
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university. (Transcript required when hired.)
  • Previous experience in public library work desirable.
Hours:
    This is an "On Call" position, with no regularly scheduled hours. The person will be asked to work four or eight hour shifts: mornings, afternoons or evenings, on weekdays, Saturdays, or Sunday afternoons. All library employees are required to work specified Sunday afternoons per calendar year at all facilities open on Sundays.

Essential Job Duties:
    Performs a variety of patron contact duties including assisting patrons with self-directed activities, handling circulation duties, reference, and information services at the various public service desks. Working under the supervision of the Human Resources Administrator, the person in this position will be trained and assigned, as needed, to work in assisting patrons at any of the public service departments at the Main Library or any of the Branch Libraries of the St. Joseph County Public Library.

  • Assists patrons of all ages with circulation functions, reference, information, and reader’s services questions in person, by phone, mail, and electronically.
  • Provide instruction in the use of print and electronic materials to patrons and co-workers.
  • Actively participate in training.
  • Assist with various projects under the guidance of the Agency/Department Manager.
  • Other similar duties as assigned.
