South Bend Tribune Obituary Index
(1913 - present)

This database is a digital index to obituaries that appeared in the South Bend Tribune, from 1913 through the present, for people with ties to St. Joseph County. (For obituaries from 1831 through 1912, or that appeared in other newspapers, St. Joseph County Public Library's Local & Family History Services has printed indexes in its room.) "People with ties to St. Joseph County" includes people who lived or had lived, worked or had worked, died, were buried, or had relatives in the county. Geographical coverage is not limited to South Bend and Mishawaka, but also includes all townships and smaller towns.

This index is ongoing. Volunteers and staff continually add current obituaries, hunt for and enter missing records, and make corrections to existing records.

To find a record for a person you are interested in, simply type the name here. You can choose to look at the records sorted by Name, Address, City, State, or Year Published.

Searching Tips
  • Do not use a comma to separate first and last names.
  • The order is not not important: first name last name, or last name first name.
  • The case is not important: john jones, John Jones, or JOHN JONES.
  • Search for first name or last name only, or for fragments of names; "libb" will bring up entries for people with first names "Libby" and "Libbie" as well as last name "Libby."

Advanced searching allows you to search for additional information, on its own or in combination. You can search for the address, city, and state of residence and also the decade of publication. Furthermore, you can search the "Notes" field for spouses' names, professional titles and degrees, veteran status, and more. (Not all records contain all information.)

The actual newsletters can be viewed in Local & Family History Services in Main Library. If you live at a distance, you can place a request for an information search.

If you have questions about the contents of this database or need help with it, contact local.history@sjcpl.org.
